Eligibility varies by state, but generally, applicants must be 65 or older (or disabled), meet specific low-income and asset limits, and require an “intermediate” or “nursing facility level of care” (typically meaning you need hands-on help with at least two daily activities, like bathing or mobility).
The application process involves applying for traditional Medicaid through your state, and then completing an assessment with your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA) to verify your level of care need. We recommend starting this process early, as there can sometimes be waitlists.
No. The Medicaid Waiver covers the cost of your care services (assistance with daily living, nursing oversight, etc.). You are still required to pay the community’s base rate for “room and board” (your suite and meals), typically using your Social Security or pension income.
Not all communities accept the waiver, and some only accept it after a required period of “private pay” (spending down your own assets first).
